COUP is the graphic design practice of Peter van den Hoogen. Before going to art school he worked as an illustrator for newspapers and advertisement offices. During his study graphic design at the University of the Arts Utrecht (HKU) he saw himself become a webdesign pioneer in 1994 via an internship at Mediamatic Interactive Publishing. In the following years he was working as a webdesigner being responsible for many organisations’ first websites like those of soccer club Ajax and de Bijenkorf. After his graduation in 1996, Peter worked as an art director and motion graphic designer but focused mostly on independent graphic design. In 1998 he founded COUP together with Erica Terpstra. Since then COUP has been active in the field of graphic design, illustration, art direction, motion graphics and consultancy, almost exclusively for cultural clients. COUP’s work has been among the Best Book design prizes, Red Dot awards, nominations for the Art Director Club Nederland (ADCN) prizes and Rotterdam Design Prize nominations. Peter has teached typography and dynamic typography at the Willem de Kooning academy in Rotterdam and HKU in Utrecht. He has been a lecturer / guest teacher at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy, Sandberg Institute, Academy of Architecture Amsterdam and SUPSI (Lugano).
